While many charities support domestic violence survivors, very few specifically focus on providing the quality legal representation crucial for navigating the complexities of the justice system. This gap leaves survivors facing overwhelming obstacles, with possibly devastating consequences, such as:
PROLONGED COURT DELAYS
Without quality legal representation, survivors face delays from 4 - 12 months between court appearances, often extending in complex cases. These delays amplify emotional and financial strain, increasing risk of homelessness and ongoing abuse.
FINANCIAL DEVASTATION
The lifetime cost of intimate partner violence for women - factoring in lost productivity, health issues, and legal expenses - averages $103,767 per survivor, with delays in child support and restraining order further worsening their financial burden.
These statistics highlight the critical need for quality legal representation as a vital lifeline for survivors navigating the justice system.
Through our work,

✽ Prevent Harmful Court Orders: Help reduce complications from court orders that force survivors and their children to maintain contact with or live near their abusers.
✽ Save Time and Costs: Expedite court proceedings to reduce financial strain and prevent costly legal battles.
✽ Provide Critical Support: Offer survivors the necessary resources to navigate these legal challenges. The costs of these cases can range from $25,000 to $250,000, and WJL is here to help.
✽ Advocate for Legislative Reform: Ensure laws protect survivors and address issues like coercive control.
✽ Collaborate with Partners: Work with organizations who provide comprehensive support services, including housing and counselling referrals.
✽ Educate Survivors: Empower survivors with the knowledge and tools they need to confidently navigate the legal system.
✽ Raise Awareness: Organize community outreach and awareness campaigns to break the stigma surrounding domestic violence and drive systemic change.
